2010 Outstanding Humanistic Dissertation Award
C-AHEAD is pleased to recognize Dr. Michelle Perepiczka as the recipient of the 2010 Outstanding Humanistic Dissertation Award. Dr. Perepiczka is honored for her humanistic dissertation research investigating wellness of counselor education doctoral students. Dr. Perepiczka was nominated by her doctoral committee chairperson, Dr. Richard Balkin, from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Dr. Perepiczka will be recognized at the C-AHEAD breakfast at the ACA conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Description of Award
The Outstanding Humanistic Dissertation Award honors a counseling graduate
student who is a member of C-AHEAD at the time of the nomination and will be a
member at the time the award is accepted, wrote a dissertation with central and
salient humanistic content, and successfully defended the dissertation during
the designated time frame (Fall 2007 through Fall 2009). The student is to be
nominated by his or her doctoral committee chair.
Nomination Process
To nominate a student, the doctoral committee chair will submit a completed
nomination form, the nominee’s curriculum vita, cover letter describing the
achievement(s) or merit(s) of the person being nominated, and a copy of the
student’s dissertation that has been successfully defended. It is optional to
submit supplemental supportive data (not to exceed 10 pages in length) as well
as a maximum of three additional letters of recommendation.
The doctoral committee chair is solely responsible for making the nomination,
gathering required and optional materials, and submitting the nomination packet.
The deadline for submission is December 1, 2009. All materials are to be
electronically submitted as attachments to an email to the awards chair person,
Michelle Perepiczka, at
mperepiczk@njcu.edu. The chair of the C-AHEAD Awards Committee will notify
all nominees and nominators of the outcome by January 31, 2010.

2. Nominee’s Curriculum Vita (Required)
The nominee’s curriculum vita is to be included in the nomination packet.
3. Cover Letter (Required)
In the cover letter, identify the nominee and the award for which you are
nominating this person. Explain why you believe the student merits the award.
Also, explain why you believe the dissertation contains central and salient
humanistic content. Brevity, clarity, and specificity are most important here.
Please reference the enclosed article for an explanation of the C-AHEAD
definition of humanistic content (Scholl, 2008).
4. Dissertation Copy (Required)
Submit the final copy of the nominee’s dissertation.
5. Support Material (Optional)
If there are materials (news reports, journal articles, letters of
recommendation, etc.) that you feel help support the nominee’s humanistic
achievements, please include a copy of them. Your total support documents cannot
exceed 10 pages in length. A maximum of three additional letters of
recommendation from others familiar with the nominee and his or her humanistic
accomplishments may be submitted in this 10 page limit.
Recognition
The Outstanding Humanistic Dissertation Award will be presented at the C-AHEAD
breakfast during the 2010 ACA Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The
award recipient and the nominator will receive an invitation to attend the
breakfast at the conference. The award recipient will have an opportunity to
present his or her dissertation findings at the breakfast. In addition, the
award recipient and his or her accomplishments will be featured in articles in
Counseling Today and Infochange. The award recipient will also receive an
invitation to submit a manuscript to be reviewed for possible inclusion in the
Journal of Humanistic Counseling, Education, and Development. The recipient may
also submit a manuscript for the Humanistic Student Research column in
Infochange to be reviewed for possible inclusion as well.
Checklist for Doctoral Committee Chairs
1. Verify that the individual you want to nominate is eligible.
a. The individual must be a current member of C-AHEAD at the time of nomination
and be a member at the time the award is accepted.
2. Prepare the nomination packet.

Each year C-AHEAD sponsors a Wellness Center at the Annual Conference of the American Counseling Association. The Wellness Center offers counselors a time and place to come together for renewal, reflection, and re-evaluation of their lives and profession. Through participation in the Wellness Center professionals can return to home or work re-energized.
